Benefits of social networking
I just spent two weekends with different friends who work in IT and it reminded me of the benefits of keeping up with peers in the business. Just through casual conversations or comparing what each is running on our laptops we share techniques and methods that are effective and productive. Its funny how we look over each other’s desktops and zero in on the new and different things in each other’s menu bars and docks.
Some of the things I walked away with:
- Menumeters for Mac OS X to watch CPU utilization, network utilization, etc.
- An Outlook 2007 preview
- Powershell command line app for Windoze
- DFSR for file replication (in real time)
- Notepad2, also for Windoze
- ASnumber and ShowIP plugins for Firefox
- Firefox 2.0
- Shimo for Mac OS X that puts Cisco’s VPN client controls on the menu bar
I also got to play the Xbox 360 on an HD LCD TV. Bad-ass. That’s all I have to say.
I also got a good book recommendation; House Of War by James Carroll on the history of the Pentagon. That’ll be my next serious book. My next book though will likely be some good pulp like Fade To Blonde or Modesty Blaise. I usually try to alternate and read one serious book and one light book.
