RSA Expo–snake oil anyone?
This being my first RSA conference, I have to say I’m severely taken
aback by the amount of corporate marketing that is present. Call me
naive, even call me inexperienced, but it stilll doesn’t change the
fact that millions of dollars are spent to pray on the sheep.
I didn’t take my camera to the opening day of the expo and
I wished I had, simply to share the gluttony with you. Amazing!
We wandered around the expo floor checking out booth after booth and
drinking free beer and I couldn’t help notice that certain vendors
literally hired magicians to entertain the crowd while they pitched
their products.
Don’t get me wrong, there are many vendors with beneficial products to
offer, but by and large, I’d have to say there is a lot of snake oil
being sold at RSA.

OMG…when do we get booth babes?!?! Come on E3 revisited!
Maybe you should hit DefCon this year for a change of pace.

Not only is RSA pass a ton of money, it’s a herding ground for sheep looking to buy new security products to meet X checklist requirement. Any comments on the talks?
See you at ShmooCon, USENIX and LISA.

[...] So far, early returns are reinforcing our choice to try to make a difference for FAIR vs. trying to make our corporate ego feel better. I think there’s still lots of benefit from attending RSA as a vendor or "just" an attendee. But I hope that from a corporate standpoint we never, ever lose site of the fact that RMI is only as good as FAIR and our ability to help you use it. [...]
