TechEd; A must see BOF
If you are going to be at TechEd, you should check out the Birds of a Feather session “The Physical Datacenter in a Virtual World” Tuesday at 7:45 pm in room N210 B. Its being moderated by my close friend and uber-smart guy Bret. He has a blog here that has more information.
Topics of discussion at the 7:45pm event include:
- Why do you use virtual machines
- Biggest issues you’re facing today in using more virtual machines
- Individual virtual server hardware design
- VMWare vs. Microsoft, what made you choose
- Backups and disaster recovery designs using virtual servers
- Identifying virtual machines on the network
- Controlling virtual machine growth and resource overutilization
- Preventing unnecessary “temp†guests from being “always onâ€
Bret works in a very large Windows environment and has always been my go-to-guy when I have questions about Microsoft products. This should be a great discussion and I wish I could make it!

I won’t be going, but that sounds like a nice discussion! I wasn’t around in my current company when the move to VMWare commenced, but we certainly have continued down that path as physical server lifecycles come due. In fact, after this fiscal year, I think about 90% of our servers will be virtual. Our production web servers have been virtual for over a year now.
And yeah, it is tough to make sure we don’t go hogwild in putting up servers and going over on utilization.

Yeah, we’re in the same boat, though we boarded a bit later.
We have a couple of our offices starting to deploy virtual servers a little too rapidly for my taste.
