Not hacked, just lazy

Thanks Michael over at An Information Security Place for giving me a heads up that my blog had some junk posts on it. He thought I had been hacked.

Only by myself Michael. =) I have an email account that the blog checks routinely. Any email in that mailbox gets posted to the blog and well, it has gotten spammed and that spam was posted right to blog.

Alan over at SSAATY has brought it to my attention before and I vowed to fix it but obviously didn’t (I will immediately after this post).

Geopress Coolness

I just found Geopress plugin for wordpress that allows you to easily include a map in your Wordpress blog entries.

This map shows where I’ll be next week (unfortunately)

This plugin is still a bit basic. Here’s a guy who’s hacked it into a nice looking plugin. I’m now waiting for him to release his own version.

Microblogging

I’ve been trying to figure out why I can’t post to my blog by sending an email from my blackberry and I’ve finally figured it out. Blackberries send email encoded as MIME and Wordpress chops off the body of the email because it appears as gibberish. Why it doesn’t post the gibberish is beyond me and how I disable MIME is also beyond me (for now).

Akismet Problems

I thought I was having problems with Akismet letting spam through on my blog, but after further investigation it appears that it did indeed catch it but somehow I still received an email to moderate them.

Weird.

A quick check on Technorati shows plenty of blog entries reporting problems.

UPDATE

Looks like the problem has been identified and fixed. Great job by the Akismet team for quick work and especially for going around to several blogs that posted about it and actually commenting on the blogs. Impressive.

Akisment spam-count

This is what I see in my Akismet section:

Akismet has caught 220 spam for you since you first installed it.

You have no spam currently in the queue. Must be your lucky day. :)

And so far only 1 has slipped through the defenses. Whehew!
